Slide 12: 1930S SANTO DOMINGO THUNDERBIRD NECKLACE
In the thirties, Native American jewelry had become increasingly popular and turquoise, particularly that from New Mexico's Cerillos mine, increasingly rare. To satisfy demand, artisans of the Santo Domingo Pueblo sourced new materials to continue their age-old traditions of finely crafted pieces. In this one of a kind necklace, the maker hand drilled gypsum beads and added accents using gypsum and red plastic and tipping it with the rare Cerillos turquoise. At the apex is an inlaid thunderbird, a traditional symbol of strength, protection and power, made with gypsum, red and black plastic and a meticulous mosaic of Cerillos turquoise. Made in USA.
