The artist known as Buffalo modeled this one-of-a-kind leather bracelet after traditional Native American ketoh bracelets, or bowguards, once used to protect the wrist of warriors from the snap of bow string when shooting arrows. Hand forged from a single ingot, the sterling silver overlay is embellished with the Buffalo's hand-stamped designs, repoussé and a single turquoise cabochon from Nevada's Fox mine. Slide 5: 1950S SHADOW BOX TURQUOISE CUFF
Using a traditional jewelry technique called shadow box, Navajo artisans added dimension and interest to their pieces by creating a domed or dimensional layer and soldering it to a bottom layer. This vintage cuff is a prime example in which ovals of Morenci turquoise nestle amidst bead balls in a sterling, shadow box cuff handcrafted in the fifties. One of a kind. Made in USA. Exclusive. A sterling cuff makes an excellent stage for the skills of the Southwestern artist known as Buffalo. Casting and forging the cuff by hand, he embellishes clouds of sterling with scalloped stamp work, setting them in the center of three-dimensional bands, repeating the stamped scallop motif to beautiful effect. The Native American who handcrafted this vintage coin silver cuff is unknown but the artist's skill lives on. Hand stamped with arrows, a traditional symbol of protection, and the rising sun, the cuff is embellished with bead ball rosettes and holds three turquoise representative of the array of blue and green found in the stones from the historic Cerrillos mine.
