Nylon is the generic term for man-made fibers composed of long chain synthetic polyamides derived from coal and petroleum. Known for its high strength and elasticity, Nylon is also abrasion, rot and mildew resistant. It has a low water absorption rate and is quick drying. These characteristics make it a great material for outerwear, hosiery, lingerie, sleepwear, sweaters, carpet and upholstery. Though spandex first appeared in the Eighties, it became associated with tight, shiny workout wear and faded from favor. Now, some 20 years later, spandex has become everyone's favorite blending fiber and has pretty much replaced all other elastomeric fibers.
