Our Product Story
The word "Keshi" in Japanese means "poppy seed". This is the common term used to identify a pearl that is produced by the oyster through the use of the grafting technique. However, in this case, the oyster got rid of the nucleus by expelling it and keeping the mantle tissue. Eventually a baroque shaped pearl with no nucleus inside of it is formed.
The nucleus acts as a "shape guider" for the pearl sac. With the nucleus missing there is nothing to "guide its actions" and the oyster does the best it can. So, each pearl is a unique expression of the oyster.
A keshi is a cultured pearl that is formed from material inside of the oyster. Whereas a natural pearl is formed from an intruder - like a grain of sand.
