|
Most of the world's cotton is grown using significant quantities of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. These inputs, along with many conventional agricultural practices, contribute to soil depletion and environmental degradation. Many of the environmental and social impacts associated with cotton production can be reduced or eliminated through the use of organic cotton cultivation practices.
Growing organic cotton starts with the soil. Living soil is the basis of the organic farm. It must be free of toxic chemicals for at least three years and enriched by compost and other organic matter. Cotton is grown without the use of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. Of all insecticides used globally each year, 25Èf that amount is used on cotton. By supporting the farmers, fabric mills, sewing factories, and retailers of organic cotton, you can contribute to the shift in awareness and help secure the future of this important industry.
