Artist Nicole Strasburg is a keen observer of the mercurial weather patterns that continually shape and reshape her surroundings. Capturing in paint the movements of the sun, wind and clouds is a joyous exercise in seizing the moment. This day on Santa Cruz Island, just off the coast of Santa Barbara, presented a rolling landscape of grasses baked by the sun, swept by the whims of the wind. The clouds overhead cast shadows as changeable as the tide. The one-of-a-kind oil painting is signed and dated 2006. 24"W x 11-1/4"H.

Nicole Strasburg seeks to capture "the quiet vastness of the untouched land" in dreamy landscapes that, though inspired by specific locations, reflect rather than reproduce nature. They evoke an emotional experience, bringing together the universal qualities of place, warmth, movement, color and light. Nicole works on birch panels, building the image through successive layers of painting, wiping, sanding and scraping. The process becomes as much about removing paint as it is about applying paint. Her technique engenders depth and movement to "convey the immensely powerful, yet quietly mysterious elements" of her surroundings.
